Is it just innocent color-blind love, or Asian evasion?
What do you mean by ‘dated?’” asks my friend Claire,* a Korean American graduate student who is living with her boyfriend, who is white, when I ask her one night over drinks if she has ever dated an Asian guy.
“You know, something more than a couple of dates,” I explain. “It doesn’t have to have been a boyfriend, but someone you at least went out with for a while.”
Claire pauses and takes a thoughtful sip of her gin and tonic while I look at her expectantly.
“Well, there was this one guy,” she begins, launching into a story about a Korean American guy she had known at one time, who was good-looking, they were friends and hung out all the time.
“So did you ever go out with him?” I cut in.
“No.”
“Why not?”
“I don’t know. It would’ve been weird,” she says, looking uncomfortable. When I press her for details, she squirms, looks away, takes another sip of her drink, sighs and finally takes a stab at an explanation. Read the rest of this entry »
Some findings when I googled “why do whitewashed asians look caucasian”, which is how, I’m guessing, the people who commented on “Looks, Feels and Sounds like Asian…” found my recent blog post. (There are some pretty angry fobs out there!)
Try googling the phrase itself to find more additional sites.
*Some comments from these sites are true, whereas some are not. Pertaining to me, that is.

Why Are Asian Men and Caucasian Women Couples More Common Lately?

One major downside to getting a Mac OS:
I will no longer be able to download from Ruckus.com and transfer music files into iTunes. Means Bye-Bye free songs for me. I might have to transfer files I convert on my PC lappy to the ‘Book’s iTunes. It may be a hassle but I think it’s worth it.
Decisions, decisions:
I’m thinking about either this or a down-payment on a Honda Civic by this coming summer. Hmmm…
The issue, of course, is money. I lack the *cha-ching*.
A few problems being me:
1) I am Asian, but absolutely a Banana*.
2) I am not attracted to Asians.
3) I avoid Asians. Honestly, it’s the assumption of the association.
4) Am I being racist against Asians?
The rant-explanation of things:
I am a totally white-washed Asian. Oh, don’t get me wrong, I’m very proud of being Chinese and the New Year celebration is one of my favorite holidays (Christmas is up there with it). I am one hundred percent Chinese, therefore I definitely look Asian. That’s the problem… I guess. There’s a certain aspect and stereotype that I try to avoid when I’m out in public, like the whole idea of Asians being in “cliques”. Oh jeez, it’s so true, and I try to avoid that as much as I can. This avoidance has contributed to the fact that I have very few Asian friends (like, 7ish in town) and most of them are from the frisbee team. Why do I hang out with them? Because they, like me, are quite non-Asian in mannerisms and therefore my personality is attracted to them. Read the rest of this entry »
Things are going a bit slow and I really have no motivation to speed up. Could be a combination of the weather and trying to recover from our Holiday Break.
Few things I’m bummed out about:
1) Some rookies have been labeled as handlers when in zone (along with other positions of course) whereas I have not (still just wing, but I’m also popper now). A little disappointing, but who am I kidding? I may have not taken frisbee as seriously as I should have the last few months but I’m determined to step it up. I guess it’s okay that I’m still a cutter/handler when doing man-on-man. I’m just disappointed a few rookies may have surpassed me in skill (and that may be due to the fact that they are faster runners than I and are more agile). I need to start throwing more often. A LOT more.
2) Yay for overdrafts! My mother’s going to call me in a few hours to “be disappointed” at me again. But c’mon! I’ve been buying textbooks! I guess I should have checked my account before purchasing things… Gah.
I can’t wait for my books to come so I can actually start studying instead of bumming around doing nothing. I hate being unproductive for so long.
